WRITE MOVES

BODY KINDNESS THROUGH MOVEMENT AND WORDS

25,600,000 million women are dissatisfied with their bodies. That’s a lot of women. It shouldn’t be this way. I believe that every woman should feel good about her body, and I am delighted to be teaming up with movement artist and yoga teacher Vanio Papadelli to run Write Moves, a six-week dance, movement and writing course taking place at Poplar Union from 23 April, 2020. The course is for all women; it’s for those who don’t regularly move alongside those that might regularly dance, or do yoga, qigong or other movement practices.  We want women from diverse backgrounds and different generations to join us in an open exploration of how our relationship to our bodies changes over the years. We are delighted to receive support from The Mayor of London’s Culture Seeds.

Vanio and I were drawn together by a mutual interest in the arts, performance, words and movement. We share a fascination of how movement based practices can bring about powerful changes and shift unhealthy patterns. In this programme we will build on our own personal experience and share our favourite ways of exploring life’s rich patterns through words and movement.

Guided through a series of dance, movement and writing inspired activities, participants will use the senses to reimagine the body through mindful movement, body-mapping, physical storytelling and writing.  We will be leading participants through mindful yoga flow and be using words to explore our feelings of embodiment and disembodiment. We will discuss how we feel our bodies are presented within a wider British cultural context, as well as in different contexts with a view to developing healthier attitudes towards our body image, both physically and emotionally. Above all, we want to bring together women to learn from each other in a space that is friendly and fun.

Write Moves takes place at Poplar Union, an arts and community centre which nurtures and showcases the untapped creative spirit of Poplar. It is situated between the Limehouse Cut and Bartlett Park, both beautiful natural, open spaces to draw inspiration from in the spring.
