QIGONG at st joseph’s

A welcoming community for gentle mindful movement

Tuesdays, 2:45–3:45 PM
St Joseph's Hall, Christchurch

More Than Just Movement

Tuesday afternoons at St Joseph's have become something special – a committed community gathering for gentle qigong practice, warm conversation, and genuine connection.

People arrive, greet familiar faces, and settle into an hour of slow, mindful movement. The practice is gentle. The atmosphere is peaceful. And afterwards, many stay to chat.

As one long-standing member puts it:

“I always leave feeling better than when I arrived.”

For some, Tuesday qigong is their main outing of the week. For others, it's an anchor that helps them meet the rest of life with more ease.

What We Practice

Each session blends traditional Qigong sequences with modern approaches, exploring the rhythms of the seasons and the Five Elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water – through gentle movements that support flexibility, balance, and wellbeing.

The practice itself is beautifully simple: slow, flowing movements coordinated with breath. Some people stand, others prefer to sit - chairs are always available and it's completely normal. You move at your own pace, in your own way.

Each month builds on the last, and the real benefits come from consistent practice over time.

Why This Class Exists

This class began when a group asked for something gentler and more contemplative than tai chi. We found this beautiful space and built a warm community together.

The Space

St Joseph's Hall is a beautiful modern building - all light and glass, warm and welcoming. It feels peaceful the moment you step inside, a world away from the busy high street just minutes away.

Easy to reach:

  • By bus: X1, X2, 1a, 1b, 1c stop right outside the hall

  • By car: Free parking on site

  • By bike

  • Location: On Purewell easy from Christchurch, Highcliffe, Mudeford, and Barton-on-Sea

Access: Step-free entrance, accessible throughout.

It's the kind of place where you can breathe.

Who Comes

Our Tuesday community ranges from 40s to 80s. What people share is an appreciation for gentle, mindful practice and a genuine warmth toward each other.

There’s no pressure to perform – just a supportive atmosphere where everyone practices at their own level. About 2–3 people use chairs each session, which is completely normal.

You don’t need to be flexible, fit, or experienced – just willing to slow down and pay attention.

What People Say

"I always leave feeling better than when I arrived."

"It's more than the sum of its parts - the practice, the people, the space all come together."

"For me, it's the highlight of my week."

"I love learning the background to the movements - understanding the tradition makes it so much richer."

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your first class: Arrive a few minutes early (2:40pm). Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Practice in bare feet or soft shoes. No special equipment needed.

During class: We begin with gentle warm-ups, move through the month’s forms, and finish with a short closing meditation. You can stand or sit.

After class: Many people stay for a chat, though you’re free to head off as suits you.

Why Qigong?

Qigong (pronounced "chee-gong") is gentle movement, breath, and meditation combined. Think of it as moving meditation - gentler than yoga, more accessible than tai chi.
